Just like people, pets can experience allergies and skin conditions triggered by environmental factors, food, or pests. These issues can cause persistent discomfort, itching, and secondary infections. At Countryside Animal Hospital, we take a special interest in dermatology and allergy management—working to identify the root cause of your pet’s irritation and developing a tailored treatment plan to provide long-term relief.

Common Allergens in Pets
Pets with flea allergy dermatitis are exceptionally sensitive to the protein found in flea saliva, so just a handful of flea bites can trigger an intense allergic reaction. Year-round flea prevention is a must for keeping pets with FAD comfortable and itch-free.
Inhalant allergies, or atopy, are spurred by pollen, grass, weeds, mold spores, and dust mites found in the environment. Most commonly, atopy results in skin irritation and inflammation, but it can also lead to the respiratory issues people with allergies often face (i.e., watery eyes, runny nose, sneezing).
Some pets develop sensitivities to ingredients in their food or treats. Contrary to popular belief, grain is typically not a trigger for food allergies. Rather, the protein source spurs itchy skin, chronic ear infections, or gastrointestinal upset. Chicken, beef, fish, eggs, soy, and dairy are some of the top ingredients that cause food allergies in pets.
To determine the cause of your pet’s discomfort, we utilize a range of diagnostic tools, including:
- Skin scrapings & cytology to identify infections or parasites
- Blood tests & allergy testing to pinpoint environmental allergens
- Food trials & elimination diets to diagnose food allergies
- Ear swabs & fecal samples to check for yeast, bacteria, or parasites
